Come closer.
We'll tell you everything

Fine fragrances have always been shrouded in secrets. Proprietary formulas sound romantic and intriguing, but the truth is, you have no idea what you’re putting on your skin. We’re removing the last black box in the beauty industry, and revealing our mystery.

The mystery of the fragrance industry seems romantic and intriguing until you start asking questions. The truth is, the term “fragrance” is often used as a catch-all for thousands of under-regulated ingredients. Sure, this protects trade secrets, but it leaves everyone else in the dark. I learned this decades ago when I became a mom, and started looking at labels on the products I used. I couldn’t imagine exposing my children to anything potentially toxic on my skin, so I gave up fragrance altogether. But I really missed it and eventually realized that if I wanted a safer, beautiful quality perfume, I would need to create it myself.

At first, I thought it would be organic and plant-based, but in the first call with the Environmental Working Group, we learned synthetics can in some cases be less allergenic than certain natural ingredients. And so, the learning curve began to steepen...

I realized that to meet the EWG Verified™ safety standards, I needed them at the table with me throughout the process. After a lot of false starts and dead ends we finally found our partners in IFF, a luxury fragrance house, and made a list of high quality ingredients we could trust. Then, we upped the ante and got the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute involved, to make sure we met their standards too.

It was a huge challenge for everyone, especially our perfumers. I was demanding the same level of mastery and quality as other fine fragrances, while also limiting the palette of ingredients that they typically formulate with from 3,000 to about 300.

It took years of us mixing and matching our short list of ingredients. Finally, our talented IFF perfumers created five distinct-feeling scents, each meant to evoke a personal memory, person, place or feeling that I love.

These aren’t just the first fine fragrances to be both EWG Verified™ and Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Gold, they’ve also been spritzed, whiffed, and refined by my closest friends, family and complete strangers.

Yes, you can - and should - dive into every single ingredient we used. Yes, you should experiment with our samples and find which fragrances make you feel your best. We’ve got nothing to hold back, no recipes to protect. If there’s anything I’ve learned through this journey, it’s that real intrigue - the best kind of romance - comes when you have nothing to hide.

“I set out to see if it was possible to develop a line of fine fragrances proving you don’t need to sacrifice quality and sophistication for safety. And we did it!”

“In working with a limited palette, you are creating an olfactive signature for the whole collection that makes it identifiable and groundbreaking. That's the part that I like - the fact that it gets you out of your comfort zone, pushing you to rethink the parameters around you as well.”

“As a perfumer, to be challenged with creating the first ever EWG Verified and Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Gold fine fragrance collection on the market was something that took a lot of fine tuning and thinking outside the box. I am thrilled with the result and truly proud of the unique and distinct creations.”

Higher Standards, Inside & Out

1. Ingredients

Every single ingredient has been vetted against the strictest standards for health and safety known today. Together with the Environmental Working Group and the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, we whittled down a long list of 3,000 ingredients to only 300 that passed the test. We’re proud to say that every Henry Rose fragrance is EWG Verified™ (a mark that stands for health, transparency, and good manufacturing practices) and Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Gold (one of the world’s most rigorous product sustainability standards).

2. Environmental Responsibility

We’re committed to doing our very best for the planet. It’s an ongoing effort, but it starts with sourcing materials from sustainable or renewable resources wherever possible.

Our bottles are made from 90% recycled glass, and are 100% recyclable. Our caps are made from sustainably-sourced and commercially compostable soy.OUR BOXES ARE MADE FROM RECYCLED CORRUGATE PAPER AND ARE RECYCLABLE.

But it doesn’t end there. We’re always searching for new ways of raising the bar as a business, and we urge you to bring this work full circle by recycling and composting when and where you can.

3. Social Responsibility

We’ve partnered with Heifer International to give back a portion of all proceeds to the farming families harvesting our vetiver in Haiti. Vetiver grows well in this tough climate but only produces a crop once every 12 to 18 months, leaving the community in need of additional income sources. By supporting Heifer International, we’re helping farmers build and expand their own businesses through a revolving loans program. As part of this effort to strengthen local economies, farmers are also learning to read and write through literacy classes organized with the Haitian government.

“There's been very limited transparency with fragrances, leaving consumers in the dark about what’s in their products. We're changing that.”
